Skills, Tests, Achievements, and Recognition - this is what STARSkate is all about!
STARSkate is a program for skaters who have achieved stage 6 of the CanSkate program and have a desire to learn how to figure skate. Skaters learn dance, skills, free skate, and interpretive skating. Skaters will be progressively tested and will have the opportunity to compete throughout the season. STARSkaters are encouraged to skate a minimum of 2 days/week, and if able to skate 3 days/week will see and achieve faster progress.
Our ASFSC STARSkate coaches use a team coaching format. This means that all skaters will be taught by all coaches during group lessons. This format allows for skaters to spend more time practicing under coach supervision, while keeping costs reasonable for families. Skaters that spend a greater amount of time working with coaches will develop better technique and progress more quickly.
Each STARSkater and their parent(s) will meet with a coach of their choice at the beginning of the season. This meeting will provide an opportunity to set goals for the session and establish a private lesson schedule. A contract between skater and coach will be created at this meeting and will include an overview of financial costs for private lesson time. Private lessons will be scheduled during independent practice time and are a cost over and above the fee paid at the time of registration.
Skaters will be assessed and tested throughout the year. As skaters progress through the STAR program, they will become increasingly more responsible for their progress through constructive practice.
