ASFSC Junior Academy
(formerly known as PreStar)

Junior Academy is a program designed to introduce young skaters to the sport of figure skating. The program allows skaters to develop their skills in Balance, Agility and Control of the CanSkate program while exploring the STARSkate program. Skaters will be introduced to a variety of STARSkate foundation skills. These skills include stroking, jumps, spins, edges, turns. Junior Academy skaters will also be given the opportunity to explore the creativity and artistry of figure skating by being involved in sessional presentation days. Skaters under the age of 12 years old may also be talent identified and invited from our CanSkate program. Junior Academy skaters are recommended to skate 2-3 days a week, which includes on-ice and off-ice training. Junior Academy skaters must have figure skaters, and wear a CSA approved helmet. Skate guards and gloves are recommended.

Class Description:

Junior Academy classes are 1.25-1.75 hours in length, which includes a 45 minute on-ice group lesson, 15 minutes of on-ice independent practice time and dryland training of 15-45 minutes (depending on the class type and day). On-ice classes are taught in a group format with lessons arranged in a progressive and sequential manner. The independent practice time allows skaters to learn how to practice effectively when they are not in a lesson. This is an important and necessary skill when your skater transitions to the STARSkate program. Dryland training assists skaters with developing the strength and muscle memory to achieve maximum success performing on ice skills. It is recommended that Junior Academy skaters skate 2-3 days/week.

Pre-requisites:

  • Aged 4-12 years
  • Passed stage 2 of the CanSkate program or by ASFSC coach invitation

NOTE:  All skaters at Stage 5 and under MUST wear a CSA approved hockey helmet while on the ice.
